Henry L. Stuart grew up in a household of advanced amateur photographers. In 1942 he was employed by Gabriel Moulin Studios, commercial photographers, in San Francisco.

He trained at the Army Air Force Technical Command photographic school at Yale University and qualified as a Photographic Laboratory Commander. At graduation he was assigned to the Army Air Corps' 1st Photomapping Group which, as its name implies, produced aeronautical charts using aerial photography.
